چکیده

Abstract Despite its prominent use among bilinguals, psycholinguistic studies reported code-switch processing costs (e.g., Meuter & Allport, 1999). This paradox may partly be due to the focus on itself instead of potential subsequent benefits. Motivated by corpus CS patterns and sociopragmatic functions CS, we asked whether bilinguals code-switches as a cue lexical characteristics upcoming speech. We report visual world study testing code-switching facilitates anticipation lower-frequency words. Results confirm that US Spanish–English (n = 30) minority (Spanish) majority (English) language in real-time less frequent word would ensue, indexed increased looks at images representing lower- vs. higher-frequency words code-switched condition, prior target onset. These results highlight need further integrate sociolinguistic observations into experimental code-switching.

Expecting the unexpected: the effects of deviance on novelty processing.

Novelty is often prioritized and detected automatically. It attracts attention-eliciting the orienting response. However, novelty is not a unitary concept, and the extent to which the orienting response is elicited depends on several factors. In the present study we investigated how stimulus novelty, deviance from the context, and complexity of the stimulus context contribute to the anterior N2...

Expecting the Unexpected - Radiation Hardened Software

Radiation induced Single Event Effects (SEEs) are a serious problem for spacecraft flight software, potentially leading to a complete loss of mission. Conventional risk mitigation has been focused on hardware, leading to slow, expensive and outdated on-board computing devices, increased power consumption and launch mass. Our approach is to look at SEEs from a software perspective, and to explic...

Honorifics: A sociocultural verb agreement cue in Japanese sentence processing

Case marking is the major cue to sentence interpretation in Japanese, whereas animacy and word order are much weaker. However, when subjects and their cases markers are omitted, Japanese honorific and humble verbs can provide information that compensates for the missing case role markers. This study examined the usage of honorific and humble verbs as cues to case role assignment by Japanese nat...

Expecting the Unexpected: Modeling of Neuromodulation

An important aspect of decision-making is the need to make interpretations and predictions in the face of uncertain information. In this issue of Neuron, Yu and Dayan describe a model of the role of acetylcholine and norepinephrine in balancing top-down expectation and bottom-up sensory input in guiding behavior. The model builds from data on physiological effects of modulators regulating the b...
